An historic race between two steamboats up the Mississippi serves as the inspiration for this song. In a virtual neck-and-neck finish, the Grey Eagle won when a deckhand hurled an arrow onto the wharf. Newspapers attached to the arrow carried the story of the laying of the first transatlantic cable; the mission of each vessel was to be the first to deliver the news to St. Paul.
